Top 5 Haunted House Movies – Number 3

3. The Shining (1980) Dir: Stanley Kubrick

Jack Nicholson Laughing

Perhaps an odd choice for a haunted house film in view of the weight of the talent involved. Stanley Kubrick was coming off a decade of redefining the historical epic and creating one of the most controversial films of all time. Similarly Jack Nicholson had produced an Oscar winning performance for One Flew Over the Cuckoos nest so what would happen when these two heavyweights got together?
First off there are several interpretations of The Shining and to view it simply as a haunted house film is perhaps short sighted but the overarching story is that of a family in a hotel where spooky goings on are taking place.
Jack’s descent into madness is surrounded by those tormented spirits that inhabit the hotel and in the end it is conversation with the spirit of Grady that push Jack to the murderous climax.
The beauty of The Shining is many fold, the graceful camerawork, the maze like corridors of the hotel echoed by the maze in the garden, the subtle but continuous ratcheting up of the tension. Many people view it as a horror film secondary to a Stanley Kubrick film, there’s nothing wrong with that but next time you view it just spend time and really think about the horror elements in the film – the witch in the bedroom, the creepy twin girls, the blood spewing lift. The Shining is a masterpiece of modern horror, a psychological study of a mans fragile psyche, a critique of the breakdown of the family unit but most of all a damn scary ghost film.

Ghostly “Face”

This next video is a continuation from the video sent to us by the family living in the North East of the UK and consists of an incident where the father had been filming one of his children, placed the camera down without stopping the recording and managed to capture the following video. It’s a good job he checked the recording before deleting it from his camera memory or he may never have found the footage! You need to look carefully at the tent but around halfway through the video, a face can be seen to appear in the child’s tent! Took us a few attempts to see it but it’s definitely there. Enjoy.

Unexplained Phenomena

Whenever ghost footage or photographs are taken, they are usually present in a house or building. This goes back to the idea of a spirit trapped in somewhere before it can move on and generally fits in with philosophy on ghosts. In saying that does that mean all ghosts that are out there are confined to four walls?
If you consider cemeteries, they have the biggest stigma about being haunted but by applying the above logic, no ‘spirit’ would ever realistically reside there, the idea being that the bodies (and souls) are laid to rest there and therefore why would a ghost ever haunt a cemetery (boredom perhaps?)
This is what intrigued me about this footage taken in an alleyway next to a cemetery near Halifax, it is significantly different to the footage taken of the rocking horse and could be explained in any number of ways but it got me thinking – are ghosts everywhere and do we only look for them in the most expected places or should we just open our mind to the possibility we are surrounded by them?

Ghosts, Ghouls & The Unexplained

Welcome, first and foremost I feel I should explain my motivation for starting this blog. You see, growing up I was always fascinated in the unexplained, especially the paranormal. I always remember my mother keeping a large, leather bound almanac on the bookcase that detailed all sorts of macabre and scary things, from screaming skulls, white ladies, ghosts in theatre’s, goblins, fairies and some of the most haunted places in the world. It included high quality pictures (the picture below was reproduced in the book) and set my young imagination racing. From the first time I opened that book I was hooked.
